Beyond BMI: DEXA SCAN

How Casper Medical Imaging & Outpatient Radiology Use DEXA Scans to Accurately Measure Total Body Composition

Casper Medical Imaging & Outpatient Radiology (CMI & OPR), are with their patients through every step of their health journey, offering trusted care and guidance that extends beyond imaging. This includes scans that support patient health and fitness goals, such as the Total Body Composition DEXA scans.

CMI & OPR’s DEXA machine has two primary uses. Technologists use it to screen for osteoporosis by measuring the density of hips and lower back, but it’s also used to scan for our total body composition to measure body fat and muscle mass. It’s low dose and only takes six minutes to scan for a patient’s total body composition.

Total Body Composition

CMI & OPR emphasize the higher detail and accuracy delivered from a Total Body Composition DEXA scan over traditional BMI measurements, First, BMI cannot account for body composition. It simply considers weight and height, leading to inaccurate results. Next, BMI does not account for fat and muscle distribution, diverse body types, or patients’ unique health risks. Instead, CMI & OPR recommend a more advanced screening for total body composition through DEXA imaging.

Total Body Composition DEXA scans are also advantageous for physical or personal trainers, offering information to help them further understand their client’s or athlete’s physical condition to help them improve their results. In other words, Total Body Composition DEXA scans can help establish a baseline health analysis and offer valuable insight into how diet, lifestyle, and different exercise programs impact overall health and physical performance.

While a Total Body Composition DEXA scan isn’t covered by insurance, CMI & OPR are committed to playing a role in patients’ overall health by providing the scan for just $99 (no doctor’s order required).
